Message From Chairman

The department has been conducting its academic activities under the faculty of Law and Shariah since the academic session 2003-2004 as per the provision of the statute of Islamic University, Bangladesh, with a view to research and dissemination of knowledge in Shariah Laws and Conventional Laws. The department has already initiated its policy to integrate both Shariah and general laws in order to achieve the goals through its syllabus, curriculum and teaching strategies. In the inception, the name of the department was Department of Al-Fiqh and the name of the degrees for graduate and post graduate level were LL.B (Hon's) in Fiqh and LL.M in Fiqh respectively. But the name of the degrees have been amended to LL.B (Honours) and LL.M on 18/12/2009 in accordance with the decision No. 58 of 95th Meeting of the Academic Council of Islamic University of Kushtia. Similarly, the name of department was amended to Al-Fiqh and Legal Studies on 10/8/2017 in accordance with the decision No. 26 of 111th meeting of the Academic Council. However, The department of Al-Fiqh and Legal Studies truly represents the main objective of Islamic University as stated the main objective behind establishing Islamic University ''to provide for instruction in theology and other field of Islamic Studies and comparative jurisprudence and such other branches of learning at Graduate and Postgraduate level as the university may think fit and make provision for research including Post-doctorate research and training for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge''. [Clause 5(a), the Islamic University Act 1980(37)]. The department also represents the faculty of Law and Shariah by its syllabus and curriculum which include the contexts of both Law and Shariah.Department of Al-Fiqh and Legal Studies is a unique department considering its medium of instructions. Students of this department shall have to learn two international languages both English and Arabic. The courses related to law are taught in English and those related to Al-Fiqh are taught in Arabic. So, a student has an opportunity to achieve an excellent status in the field of legal studies by perusing the books of general law as well as those of Al-Fiqh. The professional opportunities of the students are available in the legal field at home and abroad and in other general profession as well.

The degrees offered by the department are:

  • Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) [4 years]
  • Master of Laws (LL.M) [One year]
  • M. Phil.
  • Ph. D

The total number of current students are 305 in LL.B (Honours), 96 in LL.M, 09 in M. Phil and 05 in Ph.D. 270 number of students have completed LL.B (Honours) with LL.M degree under this department till-2017. Along with them, 5 M. Phil researchers and 02 (Two) Ph.D. researcher have already been awarded degrees under this department. ­­­
