Inauguration of a Botanical Garden at IU

We know that a botanical garden is a garden where plant species that are rare, exotic or useful are grown for scientific or educational purposes. Islamic University authority has attempted to make such a garden on a land of 10 bighas beside the university lake. 140 species of rare trees and the trees which are on the verge of being extinction are to be planted in this garden. The VC of IU Professor Dr. Rashid Askari inaugurated this botanical garden by planting a cherry tree's sapling on 03 August, 2019. The Pro-VC Professor Dr. M. Shahinoor Rahman and the Treasurer Professor Dr. Selim Toha were there as special guests. Addressing the inauguration ceremony as the chief guest, the VC Professor Dr. Rashid Askari said, "My source of inspiration is our Prime Minister Janonetri Sheikh Hasina because she sleeps only for five hours and the rest of time of a day is spent by her merely to think for the well-being of the country. Since the moment I took the charge of the VC of this university I, together with the Pro-VC and the Treasurer, have been working relentlessly to implement different development works of this university. Now this university is, in fact, on the brink of the revolution of infrastructural development. Moreover, a good number of infrastructural development works are awaiting to be implemented in days to come." He also urged to make this campus a green one. He said, "We've adopted a long-term plan accordingly." He also opined, "Every citizen of this country has to plant at least one tree every year in order to protect the country from the negative effect of climate change and global warming." He said, "This botanical garden will help the students introduce to its different rare and exotic trees. In fact, this garden will turn into a research or knowledge centre for both the students and the researchers.
